I think industrial super permanent Sharpie markers work really well for personalized ceramic projects. Unlike the permanent Sharpie variety, the industrial variant  remains permanent under most chemical washes and extreme heat and steam up to 500 F. Of course, to make everything foolproof, pop your ceramic ware into the oven  at 400 F for 30 minutes after the ink dries.
